Warning Regarding IRS Email Scam

A new scam is making the rounds via email. This email, which warns of discrepancies on the recipient's income tax return and requests that personal information be sent via fax to a toll-free number. While the email appears legitimate and is filled with enough details to be convincing, be warned. It is a scam trying to collect your personal information.  The data requested includes the Social Security number, e-file PIN and adjusted gross income which the IRS uses to authenticate taxpayers.

While the IRS may do follow-up correspondence with individual taxpayers via email, it is always initiated by a letter in an official envelope.

The best thing to do is delete the email immediately.  We have said it before, but it bears repeating. Never open an attachment or provide your personal information in response to an email.

See below for an image of the official-looking message.
