Business Model Review
A business model is the way a company structures itself to achieve its mission. A business plan is a summary of how to execute on that business model. Although most companies could benefit from a thorough evaluation of their business model every few years, there are a number of “inflection points” in the development and maturity of many companies that greatly increase the likelihood of benefit from doing so. For example.
- Change in the fundamental nature of the company:
A good example would be a product development company’s transition to a commercial company, once they have perfected their product.
- Change in ownership:
New ownership is likely to bring a different set of objectives and constraints that would call for adjustments to the business model.
-
Significant growth or change in product mix:
Changes occurring gradually may lull management into failing to periodically examine the business model to see if it could be improved to reflect the changes. - Change in the competitive landscape:
If three of your competitors recently merged, then you might need a new business model.
By assessing the current situation and developing a clear understanding of the company’s mission, one or more business models is developed to help achieve that mission. Initially, we identify gaps between what we have and what we need and then develop ways to fill those gaps through M&A or Collaborative Business Structures (CBS).
